Leaving the house with a newborn?

It can be challenging at first, but it will get easier.

It may feel challenging during the initial weeks and months, but it does become easier over time. Your confidence as a parent grows, making outings with your baby more manageable. You establish a routine, master handling the car seat, and become adept at packing your diaper bag.

Keep your diaper bag stocked

When it comes to diaper bags, ensure it is always prepared and ready for your outings. After returning home, restock it with essentials like diapers, spare clothes, burp cloths, and more. This practice saves you from last-minute scrambles to gather necessary items before leaving the house.

To protect your baby from potential germs, consider the following precautions:

  • Minimize close contact with crowds to reduce exposure.

  • Ensure that anyone who holds or touches your baby washes their hands.

  • Avoid contact with individuals who are unwell.

Plan outings when your baby is content, typically after feeding and changing, as they may be more relaxed and likely to nap while out. When spending time outdoors: Dress them appropriately, ensuring their head, feet, and hands are covered if it's cool.Dress them in layers similar to an adult, with an extra blanket or jacket as needed. Shield them from the sun using shade, sunscreen, and light clothing for protection.

Give yourself extra time, but be OK with being late.

Allow Yourself Additional Time, Embrace the Possibility of Delays Transitioning from always being punctual to frequently running late was a challenging adjustment for me, especially arriving with spit-up stains. If timeliness is crucial to you, allocate yourself a generous buffer – more time than you believe necessary, as you may require it. If you're still tardy, those you're meeting should understand. Just getting out is an achievement, so celebrate that and don't fret about your arrival time.

Ask for help! If you can of course.

Embarking on solo adventures with your little one can be empowering. Even a trip to a nearby coffee shop can feel like a grand expedition! If you're struggling to leave the house and your partner is available, don't hesitate to ask for assistance. They could help by carrying the car seat or simply unlocking and starting the car for you.

Practice makes perfect!

Practice makes perfect, especially in the journey of parenthood. The learning curve can be steep, but the more you engage in parenting tasks, the more proficient you'll become. Venturing out of the house will soon become second nature. It's okay to take it easy in the initial weeks and rest at home if needed. However, don't hesitate to explore and engage in activities outside, as challenging as it may be, because every experience is a learning opportunity.
